Publication Overview

  • A unique record of The Beatles in their home town
  • Previously published as two limited-edition books – now available in the trade for the first time, in one beautiful volume

In 1964 Astrid Kirchherr and Max Scheler travelled from Hamburg to England to photograph The Beatles. They had met and photographed the group when John, Paul, George and Ringo had spent time on the Hamburg club circuit, shortly before they were catapulted to superstardom. Now, they were charged with recording the shooting of A Hard Day's Night – capturing the boys at work and leisure on and off the set.

Yesterday – The Beatles in Liverpool is a fascinating record of the world's first and greatest supergroup. Here are images of The Beatles in both public and private moments. Kirchherr and Scheler followed the boys to work on the film, photographed them in their London homes and, most importantly, in their favourite clubs and hangouts in their home town of Liverpool, including recording sessions at the Cavern Club.

The book is an amazing archive, summing up not only a momentous period in The Beatles' career, but also the inspirational effect of the Liverpool music scene's early 60s explosion, and the phenomenon of the Merseybeat.
