The origins of modern American country music date back to the folk music of the Pilgrims in Alabama. With the introduction of the banjo at the end of the 18th century, the term 'country music' was used for the first time. It evolved into many styles, including western swing, bluegrass, Cajun, country rock, pop and crossover, westcoast rock and the new traditionalism, but country music has always reflected the lives of working people.
Cowboy songs find their parallel in the railroad songs of later generations. Lyrics expressing the hardships of early pioneers are echoed in latter-day protest songs. It is the music of community, religion, love and heartache. That's not to forget its vibrant humour and joy, and its unending invitation to sing, dance, celebrate and, basically, have a good ole time. Following an introductory overview, Will the Circle be Unbroken presents the definitive pictorial history of the music.
