Publication Overview

  • Introduction by Clint Eastwood
  • All the films, stars and technological developments
  • From the first Nickelodeon in the early 1900s, through the advent of the talkies, to Warner Bros. in the twenty-first century
  • Published in association with Warner Bros.

The history of Warner Bros. is the history of Hollywood. Warner Bros. was founded in 1923, the year it presented the greatest canine star, Rin-Tin-Tin, to the world. Four years later Warner Bros. ended the silent era with the new talkies, forcing the rest of Hollywood to follow. In the 1930s they were famous for their glitzy Busby Berkeley musicals, hardhitting social-conscience films, and a roster of iconic stars such as James Cagney, Bette Davis, Errol Flynn and Humphrey Bogart. Since then Warner Bros. has made definitive films in every genre, from westerns to swashbuckling adventures, film-noir thrillers to light-hearted musicals, historical biographies to science-fiction fantasies.

You Must Remember This is the companion volume to Richard Schickel's five-hour televison documentary history of the studio, featuring previously unseen material from the studio archives and an array of interviews with many of the greatest names. The authors, the distinguished critic and film historian Richard Schickel who will introduce each of the five sections, and prominent film author George Perry, have been given unprecedented access to the Warner Bros. archives, and this lavishly illustrated book contains visual treasures that have languished unseen for decades.

Reviews

The Tennessean, September 14, 2008
"[You Must Remember This: The Warner Bros. Story] is a massive volume of photographs and behind-the-scenes stories. While classic movie lovers will enjoy the first half of the book, fans of more recent cinema won't feel neglected. Eastwood, Clooney and the Harry Potter films are some of the more current topics included."

Newsday, September 21, 2008
"[You Must Remember This: The Warner Bros. Story] is a handsome 480-page tome more than worthy of keeping company with the sterling silver tea service on any coffee table."

Variety, September 8, 2008
"This handsome coffee table book is a tie-in to the five-hour PBS documentary that Richard Schickel wrote and produced to celebrate the studio's 85th anniversary. Here, he shares the writing honors with George Perry, providing essays on the studio's history from its 1923 beginnings through various changes in corporate ownership. His prose is accompanied by arresting images culled from lobby cards, local photography and publicity stills."
