Buildings for Tomorrow: Architecture That Changed Our World by Paul Cattermole is the future encapsulated in one fascinating read. If you think Norman Foster's St Mary Axe Gherkin is bizarre, take a deep breath.

You will be astonished at the range of buildings in the book, from the giant tentacled octopus Kunsthaus in the Austrian city of Graz, and Selfridges' metal-studded curvaceous superstore in Birmingham, to Calatrava's completely weird and beautiful City of Arts and Sciences in Valencia.

Closer to home, Niall McLaughlin's The Shack, a studio for a wildlife photographer in Northamptonshire, has the intriguing form of an insect's carapace and proves that practical need never be dull.
