Publication Overview

Born in 1950 (The Year Of The Tiger!) Dave Richardson is a well-respected art director and designer, working in the music, film, TV and advertising areas.

Richardson started his prolific career by following in Hockney's illustrious footsteps to that hotbed of late 60s creativity, Bradford Art College. Here, inspired by the likes of Jeff Nuttall and Roddy Carmichael, he discovered the multi-disciplined talents and attitude of Milton Glaser, the American co-founder of Pushpin Studios. Their "anything is possible" and relentless work ethic, mixing design, illustration and typography was a true inspiration.

On leaving college Richardson found early success in New York, designing toy packaging and creating cartoon characters for animation and publishing purposes. Clients included Ideal Toys, Columbia Pictures and Random House.

A chance meeting with the then manager of heavy rock group AC/DC led to Richardson designing logos and posters for the group's ground-breaking American tour. Further diverse commissions followed, including designs for Mick Jagger, David Bowie, The Stranglers, Wham!, Tina Turner, Van Morrison, Black Sabbath, Gang Of Four, Paul McCartney, John Lennon, Cream, Stan Getz, Motorhead and Whitney Houston.

In addition to music design Richardson has art directed, designed or illustrated for such varied clients as McDonalds, Boots 17, Levi's, Playboy, MOMI (Museum Of Moving Image), Bertlesmann, BBC, Rolling Stone, Coronation Street, London Zoo and The Imperial War Museum. Design work of note includes Ken Burns's documentaries The West, American Civil War, and Jazz; the BBC's The Great War, Brideshead Revisited, Glam Metal Detectives and Channel 4's The First World War.

In early 2006, Richardson started his TIGERRIFIC 2010 project. This incorporates utilising his vast collection of tiger artefacts and ephemera in the publishing, music, animation, website and exhibition areas, culminating in a comprehensive exhibition in 2010, the next Chinese Year Of The Tiger.
