Publication Overview

  • Published for the centenary of the legendary cricketer in August 2008
  • A fascinating introduction to Don Bradman's life and career for young readers
  • 50 original illustrations by the great Australian artist Robert Ingpen

Donald Bradman is one of the best-known and best-loved cricketers in the history of the game. Born in New South Wales, Australia in 1908, Bradman cut his cricketing teeth with the local team before being invited for a trial in Sydney.

Looking for promising young bowlers, the selectors immediately recognised they actually had an extremely talented batsman on their hands ? and the boy from Bowral never looked back.

He made his first tour of England in 1930, when he went beyond all expectations to score 974 runs at an average of 139.4 per over - a record that still stands today. He continued to impress throughout the 1930s, making masterful double hundreds at Melbourne and Adelaide that secured the Ashes for Australia once again. His return to the game after the Second World War did not disappoint, and in his last tour of England in 1948 he played a series that proved a fitting finale to an imcomparable career, with a team that earned the nickname 'The Invincibles'. In 1996 he was the inaugural inductee to the Australian Cricket Hall of Fame.

The Boy from Bowral is a perfect introduction for children to this great sporting legend. From his childhood, including his first real game at the age of 12 on the pitch that was later named the Bradman Oval in his honour, through his defence of the bodyline bowling technique devised to reduce his dominance in the 1930s Ashes tournament, to his great undefeated run in 1948, this book covers Bradman's entire career, as well as including facts and statistics, and a comparison of Bradman with other great cricketing heroes.

This is the perfect gift for every aspiring young cricketer.
